Business Environment
In 2011, the Food Safety Modernization Act was enacted and it projected a major impact on
many businesses that were affiliated with the food industry. The process in which companies
utilized to gather goods from farms was impacted as well as the company’s finances such as that
of the sale of goods to their consumers. This Act was put in place to ensure that all food is safe
for human consumption by obstructing contamination rather than just acknowledging it (Science
Direct). Because of this, Starbucks was required to produce a safety plan that met the standards
of the Food Safety Modernization Act.
The Food Safety Modernization Act acknowledges that the preventive control standards are
an imperative part in food safety. They have a mandatory inspection frequency whereas high-risk
domestic facilities must be inspected within no more than five years and no less than three
thereafter (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). They also require record access as well as
implementing testing by accredited laboratories. This is why Starbucks has executed a product
traceability program that gives the company authorization to trace 100% of the raw materials in a
specific item within four hours (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).
Sustainability
There are two main areas of focus that any coffee related company must implement in order
to have an effective sustainable business strategy. For one they must maintain their relationships
with local farmers to ensure there is enough product for import as well as maintaining the safety
of international imports. This strategy will allow for Starbucks to control and monitor any and all
variations of coffee that is being purchased in other roasteries. The Food and Drug
Administration regulates all farms in the United States, but international regulations are a bit
different which is why import control and records will ensure that all products meet the same
high quality standard (NCA).
