Toward A Black Feminist Criticism
Towards a black feminist criticism, Barbara Smith's work is widely accepted as
amongst the very first theoretical pieces grounded on Black feminist criticism. In her book,
Smith explains the need for adopting a particular ''Black feminist” approach to the literature.
Smith's work examines the root causes of inequality and promotes progressive social change.
This specific work confirms that black women's literature is hindered due to historical
political, economic, and social restraints. Nevertheless, if the latter will be set in motion in
the current century, it will open up the chance needed to explore all black women's lives and,

can comfortably identify the writers is because of their unique writing styles. They are known
to utilize a standard approach due to direct influence from the political, economic, and social
systems (Smith 426). Again they are known to use black ladies' language in all their texts,

diversity and representation in literature by casting characters that black feminists can
identify with and developing outstanding arts. Inclusivity in literature is important because it
reinforces positive views of what can be achieved in the society irrespective of race.
Black female authors are not taken seriously because of their colleagues' negativity,
which already exists from their colleagues in the writing industry. According to Smith, black
literature is persistently ignored in the United States due to the negative stereotype against
black female authors. Again the fact they are of the female gender victimizes them, and the
readers fail to accommodate them seriously (Smith 410). Smith deeply presumes that the
black lesbians' literature and the low-class level black women are ignored. Thus, it would be
accurate to assert that both Greek and American society expected women to be subservient.
Both institutions also thought their literary and artistic work to be deficient in wisdom and
knowledge.
In my opinion, I decline the fact feminism should generally be referred to as black
feminism. The experience of being a black woman cannot be understood in terms of being
black or of being a woman but must be considered independently while coining feminism.
The reason behind the assumption is due to the current status in literature. The majority of a
white female writer is known to influence massive followers who are always ready to accept
their work. Therefore, the distinction of black feminism has given birth to "white feminism,"
used to ridicule feminists who do not identify with intersectionality. Black feminism is
marginalized in different sectors, and people are more receptive to the ideas about feminism
when handling the topic indirectly. Critics of Black feminism assert that separation along the
lines of race and gender weakens the strength of feminist campaigns and anti-racist
movements.
