Epigenetics
Epigenetics is the study of changes in organisms caused by heritable alteration, in which
the DNA sequence itself is unchanged. Epigenetic inheritance is the heritable phenotype changes
that do not involve the alteration of the DNA sequence. Several epigenetic alterations happen
either on histones, which are conventionally related with DNA in chromatin, or promptly on the
DNA. The video addresses the following critical concerns about epigenetic. Why are people so
alike be so unlike? Is being identical a risk of developing some diseases? It further shades light
on the risks of the predisposition and the hope for potential therapeutic targets.
Gene expression can be reduced or silenced without changing the DNA sequence of the
gene. The epigenetic video shows a diversion in appearance and genetics as one age. The first
thing that comes into mind if you are studying identical twins is the environmental exposure.
Identical twins can defer in facial expression and ability to run fast or even likeliness of being
predisposed to diseases. Difference in appearance can be from difference in lifestyle like clothing
or even how one individual cut their hair.
The DNA can be identical despite the difference in genes responsible for specific
function or anomaly. A particular gene can stay on in one organism while off in the other. For
example, in the mice, despites being genetically identical, one is obese while the other is not.

Same observation appears in the identical twins, one being diagnosed with cancer and the other
is unlikely to be diagnosed with cancer. As twins ages, their epigenome changes. Epigenetic
distinctness assembles particularly if their lifestyle is dissimilar. While the chemical tag that
manage our genes changes, cells are likely to become abnormal triggering diseases like arthritis.
Epigenome comprises of a record of the chemical adjustments to the DNA and the
histone proteins of an individual. They tell cell what sort of function they should be, whether
being cells of lungs, heart etc. They can as well silence some genes that are not needed to make
cells difference from one another. These amends can be passed down to an individual’s offspring
through epigenetic inheritance mechanisms. These changes can also be noticed when an
alteration occurs during, puberty, pregnancy or due to differences in lifestyle. Feeding can turn
some genes off. What you eat or what your parents and grandparents ate can affect your genes or
those for future generation.
Silencing of important genes can transform normal cells to abnormal cells. However,
epigenetic therapies can eliminate this. The therapy is not directed to destroying the abnormal
cells like the current chemotherapy, rather, the cells can be reminded to behave normally in
epigenetic therapy. The therapy is aimed at reminding the cells to behave normally either by
chemical therapy or just lifestyle. It is the responsibility of the parents to understand that their
lifestyle could affect future generation. The mice are fed different food to silence or turn on a
specific gene responsible for obesity. One mouse is therefore, obese and different in color while
the other is not obese. This is an important finding as it can be applied to curb some life-
threatening diseases and disorders especially those associated with obesity.
The family combination of shared genes, environment, behaviors, and culture can be a
