Louisiana Purchase (1803)
was a land deal between the United States and
France, in which the U.S. acquired approximately
827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi
River for $15 million. It was the deal of the century
Lewis & Clark and Zebulon Pike’s expeditions
(1804-6)
The Pike Expedition was a military party sent out
by President Thomas Jefferson and authorized by
the United States government to explore the south
and west of the recent Louisiana Purchase.
Hamilton- Burr Duel (1804)
A duel between Alexander Hamilton & Aaron Burr.
That resulted in the death of Hamilton
Chase impeachment trial (1804)
removed a federal judge for reasons of drunkenness
and insanity. Accusing Chase of refusing to dismiss
biased jurors and of excluding or limiting defense
witnesses in two politically sensitive cases.
Burr Conspiracy and trial (1807)
Once Burr was put on trial for treason, Jefferson
tried to set him up, in order to get him convicted.
Jefferson put a test to his character and morality.
But Burr was never deemed unpatriotic, especially
because John Marshall was serving as Chief Justice,
a cousin of Jefferson who was almost always ruling
against his wishes.
