RES 861: WK4: DQ1: To implement a “doable” dissertation study, the doctoral learner must
transition from a topic of interest to identifying gap in the extant research. That is, the
dissertation problem must emerge as a gap from prior research. Discuss the gap you have
identified for your dissertation study and the research that outlines the gap for your study. How is
your dissertation topic justified by prior research? Explain.
Hello,
You did an excellent job responding to this discussion question. The dissertation problem must
emerge as a gap from prior research. Prior research I studied indicated that it is important to
study leadership because leadership encourages growth and progress (Rehman et al., 2019).
Administrators should try to empower teachers. Empowered teachers have higher job satisfaction
rate that encourages job retention (Atik & Celik, 2020).
Leithwood et al., (2020) argued that there is a need for more research regarding how school
leaders enact particular practices, what exactly those practices entail, as well as the impact or
results of those practices. Yuan-Duen (2019) also identified a need to gain responses directly
from teachers, rather than administrators, regarding school administrators using transformational
leadership and the influence it has on teachers. Lastly, Atik and Celik (2020) recommended a
need to examine areas teachers want to be empowered in through conducting qualitative
research. Thus, this proposed qualitative case study will address the recommendations from
Leithwood et al., (2020), Yuan-Duen (2019), and Atik and Celik (2020) and explore the
influence of administrative leadership on the motivation, job satisfaction, and retention of
teachers.
There is a call for further research into the influence administrators have on the motivation, job
satisfaction, and retention of teachers (Atik & Celik, 2020). It is not known how administrative
leadership styles influence the motivation, job satisfaction, and retention of teachers. Therefore, I
will be further researching what leadership styles administrators use that motivate teacher,
creates job satisfaction, and encourages the retention of teachers within the Midwestern Region
of the United States.
Again, you did an excellent job responding to this discussion question.

DQ2: The Background of the Problem section in Chapter 2 identifies, based on prior research, the
gap or need that informs the topic and problem statement for the research study.
Discuss the research gap you have identified for your dissertation study.
How does this gap inform the problem statement of the study?
How does the problem statement, in turn, inform the theoretical foundation you select for the
study?
How do the problem statement and theoretical foundation inform the development of content for
the study’s literature review?
Hello Class and Dr. White,
The Background of the Problem within a dissertation is based on prior research and identifies the
gap or need that informs the topic and problem statement for the research study. The gap I have
identified for my research study indicates a need for further research into the influence of social
media and the effects on adolescents . Leithwood et al., (2020) argued that there is a need for
more research regarding how school leaders enact particular practices, what exactly those
practices entail, as well as the impact or results of those practices. Yuan-Duen (2019) also
identified a need to gain responses directly from teachers, rather than administrators,
regarding school administrators using transformational leadership and the influence it has on
teachers. Lastly, Atik and Celik (2020) recommended a need to examine areas teachers want to
be empowered in through conducting qualitative research. Thus, this proposed qualitative case
study will address the recommendations from Leithwood et al., (2020), Yuan-Duen (2019), and
Atik and Celik (2020) and explore the influence of administrative leadership on the motivation,
job satisfaction, and retention of teachers.
My problem statement is as follows: It is not known how school administrative leadership
influences the motivation, job satisfaction, and retention of teachers. The gap found within the
literature indicated a need for qualitative research methods to study the influence
administrative leadership has on teachers. The theoretical foundation for my dissertation
research study is Transformational Leadership Theory. There are four types of transformational
leadership which includes Idealized influence, individualized consideration, intellectual
stimulation, inspirational motivation (Atalay et al., 2019). Through enhancing motivation,
morale, and performance of followers through connecting the followers mission and collective
identity of the organization to the individuals sense of identity and self, administrators can
motivate teachers, enhance job satisfaction, and better retain teachers.
The problem statement and theoretical foundation inform the development of content for the
study’s literature review because it provides a basic outline and structure towards where the
research is headed. It also informs what specifically should be studied, analyzed, and developed
to help enhance research within a specific field. The theoretical foundation lays the blueprint for
why and how the gap should be studied.
Thank you for reading my post.
