Overview
The leadership capabilities of a prison warden are one of the key elements in the success
or failure of operational efficacy. Strong leadership techniques combined with emotional
intelligence, a transformative management style and a broad-spectrum knowledge base is
required of a successful warden. The warden bears responsibility for the overall operational and
success of the entire system much like the CEO of a corporation (Schonfield, 2018). The
operation of modern prisons includes multifaceted expertise which include; employee relations,
daily operations, plant management, safety of guards and prisoners, liaison with government and
community and many other operational elements that exist on a day to day basis (Schonfield,
2018). The culture developed by the warden and broadcast to his subordinates, inmates and
correctional officers will impact the ability to retain personnel and to recruit personnel.
Motivating individuals and the creating an environment where you feel good about what you do,
pride in the work, has more value than formal rewards such as the paycheck (Katzenbach, 2010,

Assure consistent and fair leadership (e.g. remove nepotism and end favoritism);
Get rid of poorly performing employees;
