Leading Teams
Leadership is a term that can be described by a multitude of methodology utilized to get
the results necessary in differing circumstances. Methodology is different for a start-up venture
than in a mature company, a small company versus a large entity and moving a company stuck
and mired in the past to a future of success. All the methodologies have attributes in common.
The foundation of leadership efficacy revolves around key components in leadership
values. Emotional, social, cultural, technical aspects are all intertwined in leadership values.
Each trait plays a role that may differ based upon the type of organization and its life span
position but are all important in every case. Leadership intelligence is the compendium of these
separate traits which are necessary to create “Pride Builders” within the team concept
(Katzenbach, 2010, p. 152). Culturally diverse teams, especially in multi-national corporations
spread throughout different countries with different cultures, demands a high degree of social-
emotional intelligence to integrate cultural differences into the team building process. This
requires the team leader to extend his or her intellectual intelligence to incorporate cultural,
religious, language and unfamiliar contexts. In order to create a motivational metric in cross
cultural organizations, a team leader is required to understand traditions and religious mores that
may differ significantly from ones own. In an increasingly internet-based business model, cross-
cultural teams are becoming the norm.
One of the best ways to understand the value of the components of Goleman’s 1995 book
“Emotional Intelligence” is to review successful entrepreneurs who utilized his concepts and
