International Operations: Advantages and Disadvantages 2
Social, Cultural, Demographic, Environmental, Political. Government, Legal and
Competitive Forces Impacting International Business
Expanding business beyond its known and comfortable domestic origins requires a
carefully planned and executed strategy. Each country which the business intends to expand into
has its own social, cultural, demographic, environmental, political, governmental, legal and
competitive forces that will demand change in the status quo of operations including recruitment,
human resources, reporting, privacy concerns and expertise required to implement a strategic
expansion plan. In this report we will discuss the basic requirements involved in meeting and
succeeding with adjusting operations to compete globally.
Society and culture impact every facet of global business expansion for Multi-National
Corporations (MNCs) (Masovic, 2018). Culture defines a group or country with social mores
that shape behavior that directly impacts the operational efficacy of businesses located within
those countries (Ghemewat, Reiche, 2011, p. 1). Culture is the cumulative behaviors exhibited by
shared values of the group, and beliefs that influence the attitudes of the group (Ghemewat,
Reiche, 2011, p. 1). This includes the powerful non-verbal communications that drive many
interactions and reveal, often, more than verbal communications. The preference of people is
learned from their culture and socialization and include how they work, how they play,
relationship to family, preferred reward system combination of intrinsic and extrinsic and
comfortable relationship matrix between management, executive and employee. These simple
factors must be understood prior to venturing forth into new international territory.
