Cultural Diversity: Challenges in International Business
Cultural diversity describes a set of customs and mores that define the underlying
assumptions of a group of peoples actions in work and life. It defines their actions and
interactions with each other and people from other cultures (Lane, Maznevski, 2014). Cultural
diversity encompasses beliefs, customs, language differences and practices. Within a culture
there may be different ethnic groups, religions, races, genders, classes, and many other distinct
differences. International business involves the interaction with multiple cultures which can
provide significant opportunities in the global marketplace but also involves some challenges.
Challenges in Diverse Cultures for Business
A business that expands into the international marketplace, either as a provider of
products or services or by developing a facility in a new country faces obstacle to success. When
that strategic plan involves moving into several global locations, it ill also involve interacting
with several different diverse cultures each with their own set of challenges. Cultural blunders
and errors, while somewhat common, can set back a strategic timeline and delay expected
revenues costing the company additional startup costs (The Impact of Culture on Doing Business
Internationally, (n.d.). These errors are made by having a cursory understanding of front line
cultural differences but failing to understand the deeper essence of what drives those cultural
differences that illuminates the reasons for the actions thus providing the business with the
nuances necessary to successfully manage a business with those cultural norms (The Impact of
Culture on Doing Business Internationally, (n.d.). Reading and studying Italy, one might gain
enough knowledge to categorize Italians as people spending most of their time in the sun. “Being
