Coca-Cola Diversity in International Markets 2
Brief Overview of the Coca-Cola Company
John S. Pemberton created Coca-Cola and the Coca-Cola Company in 1886. Currently,
Coca-Cola is one of the world’s leading non-alcoholic soft drink and beverage companies
producing over 400 products from the iconic Coke to bottled water in over 200 countries (Baah,
Bohaker, 2015, p. 2). The largest foreign markets for Coca-Cola products are Mexico, India,
China, Brazil, and Japan. Together with the U.S. which accounted for 19% of revenues in 2015,
these countries provide the company with 50% of its revenues (Agarwal, 2017).The company
has seen a reduction in revenues due to the world embracing a healthier lower sugar lifestyle. In
2014, the company posted 15.4% net income of revenues whereas in the previous year it posted
18.3%. The company has branched out into bottled water and vitamin water to increase revenues
and profits (Baah, Bohaker, 2015, p. 3). The company is the world’s fifth largest company with
revenues of $37 billion and a brand value of $70 billion. The company owns popular brands such
as Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Dasani, along with 500 sparkling and still brands and over 3,900
beverage choices (Coca-Cola Beverages and Products, (n.d.). More than 1.9 billion servings of
company products are served worldwide each day (Coca-Cola Beverages and Products, (n.d.).
The company business model is based upon selling syrup to approved privately owned
bottling companies worldwide that then blend syrups and either sparkling or still water and any
additives to the syrup and then bottles and packages the finished product. That creates thousands
of businesses worldwide who must meet Coca-Cola standards but operate their own bottling
companies and ship directly to wholesale and retail customers (Trefis Team, 2019). In 2017, the
five largest bottling partners of Coca-Cola were, Coca-Cola Femsa in Central and South America
and the Philippines, CCEP, Europe and EU, Coca-Cola Hellenic, Eastern Europe, ARCA
