How Assessment and Evaluation is Done in the Teaching of English Language
English teachers should be able to examine and assess the learning performance of their pupils.
Evaluation has more meaning and purpose than evaluation and testing. Evaluation and testing are
the evaluation sub-sets. Evaluation represents a method or method of knowing whether or not
teachers have effectively and correctly done teaching and teaching processes by knowing
whether the teachers are following the skills, learners, teachers' competencies, materials, learning
strategies and media, evaluation procedures, and test items. The quality of teaching and learning
may be assessed using the results of classroom observed, interviewed, tested, and evaluation.
i. General Objective Identification and Definition:
The first stage in the assessment process is to define what is to be assessed, i.e. educational
targets. What skills, if a pupil, say, mathematics, is to be cultivated for one year? How should the
pupil who is learning his mothers' language comprehension be developed? These questions will
not be answered unless the teacher defines and states the goals.
The process of establishing and defining educational goals is complicated; all teachers do not
follow a simple or single method. Some like to start with the contents of the course, some with
general purposes, and some with the target lists given by the curriculum specialists in the field.
Therefore, when we indicate the objectives, we may concentrate effectively our attention after a
study course on the product, i.e. on the conduct, and declare it in terms of its expertise,
comprehension, competence, application, attitudes, and interests.
