2011). Despite these drawbacks, the school’s results show an improvement in the learning curve.
Another concept highlighted in the video is tenure for teachers. In the video, the principle
supports the abolishment of tenure since it affects the students by allowing schools to retain
underperforming teachers. Tenure is a law that gives teachers the right to know the reasons for a
discharge and the right to seek help from the court. From this standpoint, the law sets that a
school must offer documentation, reason, and hearing before firing a teacher (Kahlenberg, 2015).
Furthermore, Joe, a former NYC schools chancellor, states that implementing TAP in schools is
difficult due to tenure. From this perspective, tenure is bad since it considers the teacher at the
expense of the students.
The video also elaborates on the criteria for evaluating teachers. On this matter, the
principle states that TAP follows a performance criterion that assesses classroom management,
student engagement, and evidence that students moved from point A to B (CBS News, 2011). In
conclusion, implementing a program like this on a national-wide level is not possible. The reason
for this is since the activity relies on the principle's assessment, a situation that may lead to
unjust lay-offs. Furthermore, implementing such a system will mean that the nation will have to
terminate unions and the tenure law, which is not possible. On this matter, the deal would be to
either terminate the tenure law or unions but not both. The other factor is that higher pay comes
with higher expectations and reduced job positions, which means that employed teachers will
have a bad work-life balance since the system requires tutors to perform extra activities beyond
teaching.
