Education Issue
Different groups of people across the world face problems from social issues usually
extend into damaging their societies. These problems pose a threat to the real life of these
groups or individuals. For periods, most people have identified unemployment, economic
deprivation, drug abuse, anti-social behavior, natural disasters, Sexually Transmitted
Diseases, poverty, and alcohol abuse, but fail to recognize education, which is also a social
problem affecting various systems and societies. This paper therefore aims providing detailed
information on how education issues affect the American society and the appropriate
measures that can be put in place to deal with the problem.
For over 30 years, parents, educators, lawmakers, and the students themselves have
brought about problems that keep students from learning. According to the National Center
for Education Statistics (2010), US spend significantly huge sums of funds in education as
compared to other member countries of Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development. However, the amount of money spent on education and similar programs does
not translate to better educational outcomes. Therefore, the American education is one which
suffers from a wide range of problems like racial prejudices as depicted in the gap between
white students and “students of color” or the non-whites. For over 30 years, school systems in
the US have been separate and unequal in terms of provision of services to students.
The number of whites in both elementary and secondary schools is higher than that of
other groups of people like the Hispanics, African Americans, and Native Americans
(Ciment, 2015). The gaps pose a threat to the education system thus proving to be a problem
that is worth dealing with.

In addition, over the past 50 years, expansion of education has brought in more
members to join OECD countries. Before the expansion and provision of an opportunity for
many people to acquire high levels of education, upper secondary, elementary, and higher
education was a priority to only the majority groups in American society. The number of
those who graduate from secondary schools and tertiary institutions has rapidly increased
when compared to the 19
th
century. Before 1965, most non-white groups were discriminated
based on color. It was the period when Native Americans had the highest dropout rate of 39
percent. Hispanics on the other hand were only allowed to attend religious mission and
secular public schools (Pittman, 2009). However, the Elementary and Secondary Act passed
by the US Congress in 1965 helps a great deal in balancing education system in America by
providing almost equal opportunities to all children and youths, inclusive of the
disadvantaged or those who are vulnerable in the society. This Act aims at establishing a
system where there is no form of discrimination for non-English speaking immigrant groups
by providing them with equal educational opportunities and sufficient special instruction
(Ciment, 2015).
Symbolic interaction perspective
Symbolic interaction approach is a theoretical approach that can apply in discussing
education issues in America that for a long time have been of major concern not only to the
nation but also to other countries of the world. This is because the US serves as an economic
market determinant for global markets and quality education is one of such factors that
promote economic stability (Pittman, 2009). Symbolic interaction perspective is a
sociological theory gives subjective meanings on events, behaviors, or objects according to
people’s perceptions. Therefore, the meanings are based on what is believed to be true rather
than objective figures. Interpretation of one another’s behavior forms the social bond that
brings different groups together. Race, age, and gender are important aspects of social
