No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind Act of (NCLB) is the United States act of congress that came
about as wide public concern about the state of education. First proposed by the administration of
George W. Bush immediately after he took office, the bill passed in the U.S. Congress with
bipartisan support. The major stated goal of this program is that 100% of students across the
nation will be proficient in reading and math by 2014.The Act requires states to develop
assessments in basic skills. States must give these assessments to all students at select grade
levels in order to receive federal school funding. (State of the union ’08: Bush on Education)The
purpose of this paper is to provide a description of the No Child Left Behind, Tell why people
oppose or support the act, tell my view of the No Child Left Behind and how it fits into my
educational experiences, State the current status of the No Child Left Behind today and describe
what changes are being proposed.
According to our text the No Child Left Behind Act is a 2002 legislation that
encompasses numerous actions designed to require all states to development rigorous content
standards, hold schools accountable for the learning of students in all subgroups, and guarantee
that all students are taught by “qualified” teachers. (Teaching today: An introduction to

. Ed). . This ACT is supposed to increase academic achievement in schools across
the nation, raise the performance of disadvantaged students to the level of their more affluent
counterparts, and attract qualified professionals to teach in every classroom.

Proponents argued that NCLB would result in improved test scores for all students,
increased accountability for states and schools, closer attention to minority students and the
achievement gap, and more school choices for students and their parents. (EBSCOhost Database)
I feel that some people believe in this act because they feel that is better for their children and
that it will help them and their children to progress in life.
However Opponents highlighted problems that attend the use of standardized tests to
assess student achievement and argued that NCLB would result in a narrowed curriculum and
unreachable goals for students with disability. (www.credoreference.com). Additionally, some
felt that limited budgets would prohibit schools and districts from providing supplemental
services outlined in the NCLB Act. Some people oppose this act because it really wasn’t
helping the children or the teachers at all.
To me, I feel that people oppose the No Child Left Behind Act because this can cause
teachers not to put in most time with the student who may need more help than the other ones
because they feel that no matter what the child will pass anyway. They will not strive as hard due
to the fact that they have a so called free pass to the next grade.
To me this act was just trying to keep children from being embarrassed about being held
back multiple times due to various reasons, but which will hurt a child more getting the help they
need to go the next grade on time or being pushed up to the grade that he or she should be in but
are not ready for? This is something that we should ask ourselves as educators as well as parents.
Helping a child learn the basics as well as fundamentals of learning is one thing, but children are
not getting help or support with learning at home a problem.
