Technology and Human Connection
Technology has affected my own life and the ability to communicate with others by
becoming attached to me. Regardless of where I go, my phone is attached to me or near me
somewhere. I believe there are both pros and cons to technology. As a 90’s baby, I still
remember a childhood without internet, cable, etc. Playing outside, climbing trees and playing
basketball with my siblings. Now raising children, I am at a crossroads of letting them stay in the
house watching TV playing on their ipads or unplugging and going to play outside. Last night we
all sat down for family movie night, to watch the Sonic movie that just came out and after about
30 minutes into the movie everyone was on their own devices not even paying attention to the
movie. It is as if what Turkle said during Ted Talk is true. We are so comfortable being alone
together. In her speech Connected, but alone? She suggests that, “parents text and do email at
breakfast and at dinner while their children complain about not having their parents’ full
attention. But then these same children deny each other their full attention” (Turkle). She then
shows a picture of her daughter and her friends “hanging out” around the couch all on their cell
phones. I agree with this part of the lecture because it is happening all around us. Even when
going to parks, I see people pulling out their phones for the excuse of taking pictures, Snap
Chatting, Tik Toking, or updating their location on social media instead of living in the moment.
Some indications that I have that people are more comfortable behind a screen in certain
situations than they are in person are when my friends say I rather text than talk. Turkle states
that, “what I’m seeing is that people get so used to being short-changed out of real conversation,
so used to getting by with less, that they’ve become almost willing to dispense with people
altogether” (Turkle). I agree with this point, instead of sharing their lives with friends and family
people rather share it with virtual friends and even complete strangers. For example, Facebook is
like an open diary for some of my close friends, they post about their relationship issues,
vacations, if they are disciplining their child and anything random that comes to mind. Even a
person's political opinion can be found online through social media. Even with gatekeeping
happening all over these social media platforms it's like we know it's happening but no one is
doing anything to address the issue. In Introduction to Sociology, it states that gatekeeping is the
sorting process by which thousands of possible messages are shaped into a mass media-
appropriate form and reduced to a manageable amount” OpenStax). Social media chooses what
news information is being shared. This amount of exposure to the media can lead to narcotizing
dysfunction. Introduction to Sociology, states that “when people are too overwhelmed with
media input to really care about the issue, so their involvement becomes defined by awareness
instead of by action about the issue at hand” (OpenStax). We use technology to feel a sense of
self worth and to connect with others but at a distance. We are lonely and yet we are also afraid
of intimacy.
