What is Communication?
- Definition→ the process in which we share our thoughts and ideas
- Properties:
- Dynamic Process: we are constantly monitoring on how we are communicating
- Interactive: you have to have another person involved
- Irreversible: once the message has been received, it cannot be taken back
- Occurs w/in a social, cultural, and physical context: location and purpose of
communication is very important
- Modes of communication:
- Reading
- Writing
- Drawing
- Signing
- Speech
What is Speech?
- DefinitionVerbal means of communicating meaning; requires neuromuscular ability
- Consists of motor sequences
- Species specific: our speech communication is different than other species
- Speech is not exactly communication, because you can speak and not interact and/or
communicate with others
- This is a more common case in children and adults with autism or other disorders
What is language?
- Definition→ a socially shared code or conventional system for representing concepts through the
use of arbitrary symbols and rule governed combinations of those symbols
A true language is marked by:
- Productivity: we can create as many utterances as possible; we can constantly make new
sentences everyday
- Semanticity
- Offers the possibility of displacement
Communication, speech or language?
- Cat meowing→ speech
- Dance of bee→ communication
- Alex the parrot→ speech/communication (not true production of language)
- Primate language→ communication/language
