Casablanca

Formalism is the synthesis of multiple elements of film. That can include things such as

editing, score, lighting, shot choices, and the effects that each element has on the audience. A lot

of movies will use manipulation of time through suyzhet and fabula. Suyzhet is an employment

of a narrative. Fabula is the chronological order of events that are contained in the story.

Different forms of manipulating time in movies can be flashback, book ending, jump cutting, in

reverse, and having a prologue, and epilogue. The flashback manipulation is taking the story

back in time to a specific part to identify a back story that helps create the scenes of the present

time period. Book endings is to begin the film and end the film with the same scene. Jump

cutting is when the story skips around in time and refuses to stay in chronological order. In

reverse is to tell the story from the end to where it all started. Lastly, having a prologue and

epilogue is to tell the story before and after the main story, like as an introduction and conclusion

surrounding the main idea of the entire story. In summary of all the manipulations in time,

suyzhet is the way the story is organized, and the fabula is the raw material that creates a story.

A film noir is an independent filmmaking formed from ideological formalism. “The film

of darkness and the night, of shadows and mean streets, of losers, grifters and bottom-

feeders.” This type of film is the normal Hollywood classic cinema type of film. This includes

chronological order, smooth transitions, massive coverage, simple structure, easy and happy

ending, and mood music. They keep the film moving in chronological order with smooth

transitions and a simple structure to create as little confusion as possible. The massive coverage

is establishing different types of shots such as mediums, close ups, and various other inserts.

Massive coverage will set different tones and moods for the scene. Mood music will also set up

the tones and help classify what kind of feeling the audience should have. Lastly, easy and happy

endings are a way to ensure audience pleasure. Independent film noirs are usually on the lower

scale of grand products. They tend to have lower budgets, be limited on shot choices, limited

location for shooting, they hold a darker subject matter and lighting, nihilism is present, and they

are normally made in pessimism or realism. Having lower budgets means that the production

value is also reduced. Limited shot choices and location is shooting is obviously not having the

best resources to choose things exactly as desired. Nihilism is the rejection of religion and morals

or the belief that life is meaningless. Pessimism is when the view of the scene is more negative.

Realism is when the view of the scene is more factual and ignores feelings and opinions. The

main purpose for independent film noir is to do what is desired and explain the story in your own

way. Casablanca is a perfect example of a film noir. Not only is it definitely a film noir, but

Casablanca is a classic film noir. “These movies respect the conventions of the genre as severely

as Westerns or Dead Teenager Movies do. They begin with costume and set design, they use

smoky jazz scores, and the characters are led to their destinies by their own weaknesses.” The

movie is set in Africa, to give off the impression of the jungle or savannah. Most of Casablanca

is taking place in Rick’s Café Americanin, which is an upscale American version of a bar in

Africa. The location choices in the film display an urban environment. Also, with that being said,

the film is shot in black and white over a colored film. Another example of how Casablanca is a

film noir is the shadows invested in the film. Many shadows take place in the movie to set off a

very specific mood in the film. Likewise, with having a flickering street lamp that acts as a

spotlight anytime someone goes outside of Rick’s Café Americanin. Another great example of

film noir taken place in Casablanca is the corruption involved in the film due to gambling. In the

film Casablanca, the characters are torn by psychological conflict. Love triangles form when Ilsa

is married to Victor but found that she was also in love with Rick. The last thing that shows that
