What are key components of online education?
Throughout history, there have been many paradigm shifts. One of the most impactful
paradigm shifts is the transition from in-class to online education. With the unprecedented
pandemic of COVID-19, online teaching and learning have become ubiquitous and
mandatory. Although online education differs from the traditional model, it is equally
beneficial. E-moderating, computer-assisted instruction programmes and computer-mediated
communication comprise key components of online education.
E-moderating is one feature of online education. It is a model that involves managing online
learning and group working through online environments designed for interactive
collaboration. (Salmon 4). The e-moderator must be able to recompense for the lack of
physical presence in the virtual classroom by creating a supportive environment, so all
students feel comfortable participating online. (Stern 8). E-moderating, if used correctly
significantly fosters a comfortable e-classroom which is essential to sound online education.
Another dimension of online education is computer-assisted instruction. Computer-assisted
instruction (CIA) is a form of human-computer interaction. It is used to make the learning of
instructional online material more efficient. (Sieber et. al. 134). CIA programmes intend to
address existing needs of particular groups of students. (Chabay and Larkin 1). This is
important because all students learn in a variety of ways. Drill and practice are one
constituent of computer-assisted instruction. Another example of CIA is a tutorial
programme. A tutorial programme is an independent instructional entity. It does not
supplement classroom teaching. (Sieber et. al. 134). Not only does this cater to students who
prefer to learn digitally but substitutes the need for learning in a traditional classroom.
Additionally, computer-mediated communication is an imperative element of online
education. Computer-mediated communication (CMC) entails the use of computer
technologies to communicate and share information. (Rodgers et al. 889). It can be
characterised by synchronous and asynchronous communication. One major benefit of
asynchronous CMC is that students and teachers can access the online classroom and its
materials at any time. On the other hand, the synchronous aspect constitutes communication
