Matthai’s Mentality Implicit Sense of Subjectivity:
- What notion of the human subject does the portrayal of Matthäi uphold?
- In part, his mentality/sense of self rests upon:
- Primacy of human reason
- Someone who represents an approach to life that is primarily governed by reason
- Man at the centre of things
- We can engineer our destiny
- Ego at the expense of: community/identification/solidarity with
others/empathy/identifying with others around you
- To what extent are we dealing with someone here who shows empathy or is it
someone who is primarily interested in controlling his drive to mastery?
- Dominance, intervention, control, and drive to mastery
- Favours the constructed over the given
- Is it someone who is open to the given or is it someone who is much more
interested in constructing reality?
John Cage:
- Turn Down Ego Noise
- The intention is to affirm this life, not to bring order out of chaos and let it “act of its
own accord”.
- To affirm this life that is messy and cannot be controlled. Let’s affirm this rather than
trying to structure or control it.
- We are more interested in letting things happen on their own accord rather than
intervening and controlling and shaping the world.
- We need to stay open to the world around us and to the messiness that the disorderly
world has.

- He tries to make this thinking the principle of his music composition.
- Nature not the Ego:
- The General Principle of Nature
- There is no central image of the world (world view) any longer.
- Nature dominates rather than ego.
- Nature, too, does not develop an organism in accordance with an idea.
- Things just grow by themselves without a central image or a co-oriented
view
- Better to Receive than to Give:
- What we hear is determined by our own emptiness, out own receptivity; we receive to
the extent we are empty to do so.
- Become receptive to the world around us.
- The less we approach that world without preconceived notion, the more open we are to
what is actually happening at the moment around us.
- Anything is possible and be open to these endless possibilities.
- Chance:
- No matter what method he used, he relied on chance, which allows anything to happen
in it. That way, he and his music would always be part of a whole that was bigger than
Cage himself.
- It is crucial for him because he is open to whatever happens outside and no longer
controlling, it is no longer about you, but it is about the larger world.
- I am interested in any art not as a closed-in thing by itself but as a going-out one to
interpenetrate (mix or merge together) with all other things.
- I believe that that chance operations constitute thorough discipline, removing likes and
dislikes of the ego and that opens the music and composer to the world around him
whether musical or not.
