Cyber-security for critical infrastructures refers to the protection against unauthorized
access to computer systems and data within systems that are connected through the internet from
the threats of cyber-attacks. The emphasis is on the protection of key government and private
sector infrastructures or assets that are very important and whose destruction would have very
negative impacts to the public health and safety, economic security and the national defense of the
nation such as energy, transportation and health sectors (Onyeji, Bazilian & Bronk, 2014).
A threat refers to any possibility of danger to the computer systems and data that may cause
harm or destruction by exploiting the available vulnerabilities to the computer systems. Threats
may come from individual hackers, politically motivated hacktivists, unfriendly state actors or
criminal enterprises and may include phishing, malicious codes, weak passwords, and outdated
software vulnerabilities among others. Countermeasures refer to the set of preventive actions that
can be put in place to reduce the levels of threats that the critical infrastructure is exposed to
(Maglaras et a.,2018 ). The countermeasures are often specific to the possible threat or
vulnerabilities. Safeguards are security controls that are meant to minimize, detect, avoid or
counteract any possible cybersecurity risks that may pose a threat to the critical installations
Actions to Improve Security of Critical Infrastructures
There are a number of best practices that can be put in place to improve the security of critical
infrastructures. The first best approach is the integration of cyber-security with machine learning
and artificial intelligence. In order to keep up with the changes in technology, this practice will
ensure that any anomalies are detected on time and this helps n improving cyber-security. The
integration of these two latest technologies to cyber-security ensures that the effectiveness of threat
mitigation and response is greatly enhanced. The second action is to increase visibility which
means that organizations are able to monitor their networks and also update their network asset
