MMORPGs 2
Cognitive Social Phenomena
Without location restriction to play high-speed games online, Massively Multi-Playing Online
Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) give gamers that ability to play virtually. According to a
report, the number of active people participating in MMORPGs is more than 217 millions
(Jonathan Scott, Alison P. Porter-Armstrong, 2013). Having advanced and realistic graphics,
these games give a real life experience to the gamers. However, referencing a couple of articles
will not much explain the topic but the real life experience while playing an online game such as
Player Unknown Battle Ground (PUBG) will elaborate the cognitive social phenomena.
In the start of virtual games played on XBOX and PlayStation, there was no
communication between the opponent players. Hence, no social cognitive phenomenon was
included at that time. However, with the latest technological updates and improvements of
consoles, players are now able to communicate with each other virtually. In addition, to create
real-time capability and experience, both the XBOX and PlayStation are competing against each
other.
Playing online games all day is considered as losing social skills by most non-gamers.
Although, the case is opposite here and it has been observed by communicating the partners in
the online game. However, players are isolating themselves from everyone physically present by
interacting socially with other players virtually. The graphics of PUBG are so real and dynamic
that gives the feel of the real world effect.
