Carbon: The Building Block of Life
All life consists principally of the core elements of macro-molecules, such as nucleic
acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Most of the structure and function of life is composed
of the interactions of various polymers of these simple molecule groups. The backbone of every
biological molecule identified is carbon. Earth life is carbon-based, possibly since each atom of
carbon will simultaneously form bonds with up to four other atoms. These features make carbon
so significant that the chains of molecules, such as proteins and DNA that form the foundation
for life. It is the fundamental building block that is significant for the formation of proteins,
carbohydrates, and fats and plays a vital role in controlling the body's physiology. The body may
also be influenced by gaseous and liquid substances that contain carbon. There is carbon in all
organic molecules, such as fats, sugars, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (Carbon Article n.p. ).
CO2 is known as carbon, and there is around 20% oxygen in the air that people inhale, much less
oxygen and more carbon dioxide in the air one exhale. Sugars such as glucose carry carbon
components in the bloodstream, and by consuming carbohydrates, carbon is therefore absorbed
into the body.
