Discussion board essay
Part 1
Once the ice melts at room temperature to be in liquid form, the molecules become free and can
now easily move around. The energy transfer took place in that some energy was applied into the
fixed molecules of the ice to energize and free them, and that is how the ice changed into water
(melted). The entropy of the system is now higher, and the water molecules are now free and can
move around randomly. If I were to heat the melted water to its boiling point, the entropy of the
system would increase more as the molecules of boiling water are far apart and can move more
freely.
Part 2
Another everyday example of entropy is the process of dissolving salt in water. Before being
dissolved, the salt particles have high structural order as salt is in solid form. In this solid-state,
the salt particles can hardly move, and so the entropy of salt is very low. After being dissolved in
water, the salt particles are energized and freed and can now easily move around randomly. This
whole process increases the disorder of energy and raises the entropy of the system. If all the
energy tends to become more disordered, we can always have a supply of usable energy through
more vigorous stirring or raising the temperature of the mixture.
