The location I decided to observe was Downtown San Diego. I observed that location at two
different times of the day. I toured by place at 12 pm and 11 pm. At 12 pm, I observed the public areas
and also the amusements. Downtown San Diego was selected because the city is full of fun, with a vast
culture hub. As I walked around the city, I observed that the historic Gaslamp Quarter with a big bar
scene and dining that are easily noticeable from a distance. During the fieldwork, most of the people I
interacted with had come to downtown San Diego for fun; Seaport Village, maritime museum, bay tours,
walk the Embarcadero, etc. The cultural attractions during the day were different from at night because
many families with children explored different areas like the park and museums.
The interaction of people in the city was very friendly. I observe different groups of people
walking around the city in pairs and others in groups. I observed that people in the town have cultivated
confidence, good communication, and good mastery of language. Also, I noticed a lot of professionals
dressed in suits and business clothes with briefcases. I saw a lot of business meetings being held at
coffee shops. I noticed that majority of people were celebrating their birthday in open areas. I saw a lot
of public transportation like bikes, cars, motorcycles, and trolleys. I observed that the town has four
trolley lines, which include Orange, UC San Diego Blue, SDG&E Silver, and Sycuan Green. During
fieldwork, there was no congestion in public transportation; they were well organized and managed.
However, s I was able to identify people running to catch the Coaster, hop on the trolley to catch up
with time, border bike, and take the shuttle. I observed a lot of people queening in the cashing places.
Most of the coffee shops and breakfast/brunch areas were opened with a variety of different
age groups. One could identify from far that coffee shops and breakfast areas have strict apprehension
of COVID-19 rules due to arrangements of seats, people entering had masks, and water points with soap
and sanitizers where people cleaned their hands before entering the areas. Illegal behavior was very
minimal, and so was the police presence. However, there was homelessness in a lot of areas. I observed
young children and women were begging in the streets and others sleeping in open areas. I heard the
homeless being intoxicated and yelling, but I also heard many professional talks from people. Trash was
well managed with minimal cases of misplaced trashes. The smell was good, with a minimal amount of
odor. Although I met with two men who were completely drunk and could not maintain their balance
when walking in the streets, I observed minimal public intoxication cases. The feeling I got was surprised
because I felt safety and kindness.
