Generally, anarchists test and question the position of authority. The
anarchist’s challenge is the question of authority and right to rule. Anarchist’s are
challenging the basis of moral justification for one’s right to have authority and to
obtain a right to rule over others. They wish to understand and find reason for the
departure from the state of nature and the reason to embark on a society with a
ruler, and leave behind a society with no authority and the complete inequality in
power.
The need for a civil state, in other words, a political obligation, comes from
the desperation for security. With the argument that anarchists present, that the
creation of a state will limit the full freedoms that everyone has in the state of
nature, there is a counter argument that provides reason for political obligation. The
argument is that, although society is losing the full spectrum of freedoms, society is
sacrificing certain freedoms in order to better the living situation and the future of
the society. The creation of the state also acts as a guarantor of the preservation of
one’s self and property.
A basic argument of anarchists is that the departure of the state of nature
will result in the depletion of freedoms, but in a better light one that supports
political obligation, the situation is a “give and take. When concurring with the fact
that society is in a state of chaos and war, one tacitly agrees that a solution is in need.
When one supports this claim for a solution, they also agree, to an extent, that
changes are to be made. In the quest for social order and peace society must agree
that there must be reasonable limits to freedoms, and in the creation of a civil state
these contracts are adapted to ensure these goals.
Rawls finds that political obligations are decided by the natural duty to
comply that society has by being within a desperate state of nature. Some
obligations cannot be specifically defined, and therefore describing political
