CRITICAL THREATS TO THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT 2
Critical Threats to the Global Environment
Over the years, the world has continued to face adverse climate change. Today, we see a
rise in temperatures on the earth’s surface which has affected many parts of the global leading to
desertification. For developed countries, industrialization has led to the release of excessive carbon
dioxide, which has continued to endanger the atmosphere. With the United Nations focusing on
enhancing a conducive environment and appropriate industrial products, developed and
developing countries entail unique priorities. Some believe that the UN should concentrate on
ensuring that there is food security in developing countries.
In contrast, others would want the United Nations to focus on ceasing civil war, leading to
harmful radiation and chemicals in the atmosphere. From the eight issues highlighted by the UN,
fossil fuels as an energy source, and civil wars prove to be the most significant threats to the global
population. This paper focuses on the two threats by identifying the factors making them a severe
risk, analyzing the role played by human beings in aggravating them, and suggesting initiatives
that ought to be taken by the global community to mitigate the threats.
Factors That Make the Threats a Severe Risk to the Global Environment
The Use of Fossil Fuels as an Energy Source
Fossil fuels have continuously been used since the industrial revolution, which began in
Great Britain. Since that period, the consumption of these fuels has been increasing, and
industrially developed countries utilize them as the primary source of energy. With the discovery
of new deposits in various parts of the world, their reserve remains limited because the UN has
been focused on addressing the issue. These fuels entail oil, coal, and natural gas and are obtained
from the organic material present on the earth’s surface for millions of years.
