EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA 2
Social media platforms, including Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, have
become increasingly popular in contemporary society. According to Loren Soeiro, approximately
three billion people, comprising about 40 percent of the world's population, use social media
applications or websites, with most individuals spending about two hours every day on social
media. However, if Soeiro's article "Is Social Media Bad for You" is anything to go by, too-
frequent use of social media has several negative health consequences on users. While most
people who frequently use social media do not do much beyond commenting on other people's
posts, sharing photos, and tweeting their views, they are at an increased risk of suffering from
loneliness, cyberbullying, depression, and anxiety among other issues. While Sternheimer agrees
that social media has a negative impact on youth, she refutes the idea of directly linking social
media usage to loneliness and cyberbullying, while ignoring multiple other factors present in
youths lives.
These consequences are not limited to cyberbullying, loneliness and predatory adults that
are mentioned by Sternheimer (2013) in chapter 3 of her book. Soeiro explains that social media
use has been associated with loneliness, with those who use social media much more frequently
twice as likely to experience social isolation. This means that the more time an individual spends
on social media, the more they are likely to be emotionally and physically isolated from the
important people in their lives (Soeiro, 2019). Study findings have also established that heavy
social media users are also likely to experience higher anxiety, although Soeiro concedes that
these findings do not necessarily prove causation. Thus, it is possible that it is anxiety and
loneliness that cause higher social media use, not the other way around. Heavy social media use
may also compromise an individual's self-esteem, an effect that resonates with me the most.
Truth be told, there are instances when I feel inadequate after spending time on social media.
