The Innovative Engine
The case of 3M Company rests on the premise of innovation. Essentially, it points out the
power of innovative capabilities towards the development of an organization. Besides, the case
study of 3M Company proves that investing in human resources is a critical factor in any
organization (Hill et al., 2020). In the case of 3M Company, the significant progress of the
organization owes back to its efforts in investing in its employees (Brand, 1998). In light of the
case study, the 3M Company has been an outstanding organization in the United States since its
foundation in 1902 making huge revenues relative to the top ten companies within America at
certain times (Hill et al., 2020). That said, the purpose of this paper is to reflect on 3M Company
and address how the organization has nurtured a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, its
strengths and weaknesses, and diversification strategies.
While breeding and nurturing a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship at 3M,
McKnight established a Central Research Lab with the main goal of expanding and leveraging
knowledge and recruiting researchers or experts with different knowledge in different fields.
Besides, McKnight developed an informal structure by creating a Technical Forum and
Technical Council to ensure that scientists could leverage technology within the company across
all divisions (Hill et al., 2020). From an entrepreneurial perspective, the company nurtured an
audit process to eliminate failure within the research and development field.
At 3M, McKnight and DeSimone had various strengths that made huge progress for the
company. However, certain weaknesses were also evident that presented huge challenges for the
growth and development of the company. Innovation is one of the strengths that helped the
company to grow and develop during McKnight and DeSimone’s period (Hill et al., 2020).
