Al-Anon MeetingPurpose: Co-dependency is an essential concept for all nurses to understand. It is a benefit to understand for all areas of nursing practice. Many patients attend self-help groups and it is vital that the nurse understand this type of support. It is also important for a nurse to be aware of the type of community resources available in our community. Requirements: The student must attend one Al-Anon meeting before their last day of clinical. The student is expected to write a one-two page evaluation of the group they observed. The student should speak to the effectiveness of the group, the size and make-up of the group. The task of the group members, including the leader, and the student’s personal thoughts and feelings regarding this group. Paper must be typed. It is important to note that if these virtual meeting require you to use Facebook or google- you may want to create a different Facebook or Google account to protect your anonymity. DUE DATES: 1st half clinical group: 10/2 by 5pm; 2nd clinical groups: 11/23 by 5pm. Process RecordingsPurpose: Therapeutic communication is essential during any interaction with another individual. When caring for an individual diagnosed with a mental illness communication is a core intervention in the person’s plan of care. Therapeutic communication is a learned skill and therefore, an activity such as the process recording provides a means for improving this skill. Everyone responds non-therapeutically at times but through analysis, non-therapeutic responses can be identified and more therapeutic responses determined for improved future communication.Requirements: The student is to complete one process recording during their clinical rotation in this course. For each process recording the student is to record verbatim (word for word) a 5-10 minute active conversation with a client. For this learning tool to be most useful to the student for improvement in therapeutic communication it is important for the student to be honest in recording and evaluation of the conversation. See table 9-4 (p. 152) of your textbook for an example. A guide for the labels for the communication techniques that the student nurses uses are on p. 143-146 Table 9-2 and 9-3. Process recordings must be typed. . You are to have a facetime conversation with a classmate and with one student playing the role of the nurse and the other the role of the patient. The student in the role of the patient mayplay the role of someone with a mental illness. No roleplaying regarding incidents of suicide are allowed. Each student is to submit a process recording as the role of the nurse.
