The nursing management of patients with respiratory disorders will vary depending on
the specific disorder and its severity. However, other general principles are applied to all patients
with respiratory disorders (Zidan et al., 2017). Patients should be encouraged to maintain good
respiratory hygiene, including washing their hands regularly, avoiding close contact with sick
people, and avoiding exposure to environmental irritants. Patients should also be encouraged to
quit smoking if they are smokers.
Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of respiratory distress, such as
shortness of breath, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. If these symptoms occur, a medical
professional should immediately assess the patient. In some cases, patients with respiratory
disorders may require supplemental oxygen (Whitney et al., 2019). The use of oxygen should be
carefully monitored, as it can be dangerous if misused. Patients have to be educated about their
specific respiratory disorder and their management. They should be aware of the signs and
symptoms of respiratory distress and know when to seek medical help. Patients should also be
taught how to appropriately use any medication or equipment prescribed to them.
