Perez Family Discussion Case Study
1. Significance of Family and Kinship for the Perez Family
Like other Mexicans, the Perez family follows a custom that fosters familism, a trait
demonstrated by the proximity of family members and connects family members. In the Perez
family, kinship fosters cooperation, harmony, and peace in resolving problems. In times of need,
every family member is always there for one another. The Perez family depends heavily on
family in both good times and bad during daily life because they live close to one another. They
can educate one another about the various facets of life. For the Perez family, kinship is vital to
keeping family harmony and directly affects health decisions. In Mexico, loyalty is practiced no
matter the situation since family comes first. Strong family bonds and culture of loyalty, honor,
and tradition are hallmarks of the Mexican family. Mexican culture believes family comes first
and "unity is strength." Family togetherness, religious convictions, parental respect, a strong
commitment to work, and loyalty are qualities that are strongly ingrained in Mexican culture.
2. Importance of Religion and God for the Perez Family
The Perez family places a high value on religion and God since they serve as markers of their
identification as Christians. The pious Perez family celebrates mass at the local Catholic church.
The family has religious memorabilia on the walls and a rosary that is constantly set up on the
coffee table. The family is committed to, as seen by the statues of St. Jude and Our Lady of
Guadalupe that are positioned on the coffee table in the living room. The household believes that
God determines their excellent health and that health is a blessing from Him. For instance, they
thank God for each child's healthy birth, particularly after the doctor advised them against having
any more children because of the challenging delivery of their first son.
