CELLULAR RESPIRATION 2
1. What are carbohydrates?
These are hydrated carbon or carbon that has been added to water molecules.
2. How is sugar different from a complex carbohydrate?
Sugar, also known as simple carbs, contains one or two sugar molecules such as glucose,
fructose. When glucose and fructose combine, they form a disaccharide known as
sucrose. Complex carbohydrate contains three or more molecules of sugar such as starch
and fiber.
3. What is a lipid or fat?
Fat is a triglyceride with three long carbon chains attached to the three carbons that make
up the triglyceride. The type of chain attached to triglyceride determines the quality of
the fatty acids.
4. How are carbohydrates made? Where do they come from?
Green plants make carbohydrates during the process of photosynthesis. Plants take in
carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light to make a six-carbon atom attached
with six molecules of water known as simple sugar (glucose/fructose) and give out
oxygen gas.
5. What are the waste products of cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration is energy production in ATP and produces water and carbon dioxide
as the waste product.
6. What happens to body fat when we burn it (cellular respiration)?
When fats are burned down, they produce glycogen. The glycogen produced is further
oxidized to produce energy in the form of ATP.
7. What happens to C02 in the environment that we breathe out during cellular respiration?
What advantage does fat have over carbohydrates? Why do we store energy as fat?
Plants take in the carbon dioxide that is released from cellular respiration to make simple
sugar during the process of photosynthesis. Fats are store more energy than
carbohydrates. We store fat as energy because it is stored in large amounts in the entire
body, more than what the body can store with carbohydrates.
Reflection
Cellular respiration is when organisms use oxygen to break down food to produce the usual cell
function energy. The energy is produced in the form of adenosine triphosphate(ATP). It is a type
of nucleic acid packed with three phosphate groups.
Cellular respiration occurs in three significant steps:
I. Glycolysis: It is the first step for the production of ATP. It takes in the cytoplasm of the
cell. The processes do not require oxygen. The glucose molecule is converted to a more
helpful molecule known as pyruvate. The process consumes 2 ATP. In return, it yields 2
ATP and 2 NADH. NADH is a coenzyme. The pyruvate molecule enters the
mitochondrion for the second step of cellular respiration.
