effects of heroin, and the continuity of usage despite the negative impact.

Part 2: Current Risks of Symptom Recurrence
In this section, you will identify the steps to reduce the risk of symptoms recurring. Describe
how you might assist Jed to identify high-risk situations, and specific triggers leading to potential
symptoms.
1. What steps has the client already taken to reduce the risk of returning to these behaviors?
What is the client’s commitment to abstain from substance use/misuse and addictive
behaviors? How will the client know if this goal is not being met?
One of the main steps is accepting that he needs help and agreeing to come to therapy. In order to
identify the triggers Jed will maintain a journal where he will take note of things that happen to
him.
2. What are some high-risk situations that may trigger a recurrence for the client? List three
specific situations that may lead to a return of symptoms.
Remaining in the old environment.
Lack of support.
Self-pity and feeling worthlessness.
3. What are some examples of irrational thinking that may create the urge to return to
previous harmful behavior?
