Psychodynamic theory and Therapy
Psychodynamic theory is one of the most influential theories in modern history.
According to Phelan (2018), psychodynamics therapy has proven to be the oldest form of
therapy since Freud first discovered it in 1874. Freud believed human behavior could explain
intrapsychic and interpersonal patterns. The theory has many interrelated theories such as
objections theory, self-psychology, drive, and ego theory that helps to explain human behavior.
The theories are interrelated in ensuring that they understand the issues that drive human
behavior.
Psychodynamic therapy involves making a person understand more about themselves and
the things that have affected their lives both in the past and present. The theory believes that
people are blank at birth and learn through interactions (Gutkind, 2017). Psychodynamic therapy
has to its advantage teaching people how to cope with addictions, manage relationships and more
so make them feel better about themselves.
Psychodynamic theory indicates that personality traits are influenced by peoples'
experiences. Psychodynamic therapy explains that personality is influenced by emotions,
thoughts, early life experiences, and beliefs (Gutkind, 2017). These therapies have helped
patients with underlying issues of depression to find out how to come out and be better with less
commitment. Secondly, therapy has enabled patients to find meaning in their lives and cope with
addictions of any kind effectively.
Psychodynamic theory has been a very effective pillar in social work in promoting
understanding. Psychodynamic therapy sessions work effectively depending on the therapist, but
it all begins with the patient describing what is in their minds (Sharpless, 2019a). It helps the
