DISCUSSION 2
Discuss some of the unique differences between mental illness populations in rural settings
versus urban or community settings
The mental illnesses spread both in rural and urban communities, but various factors
differentiate them. The United States of America's rural communities showed that 18.7 percent
of people suffer from various disorders (American Psychological Association, 2021). On the
other hand, the cities are considered more linked with mental illness, and there is almost 20
percent of people are suffering from mental health issues (Mongelli, 2020). In the developed
countries, people will face more burdens associated with mental disorders (Srivastava, 2009).
But the treatment of mental health illness is a challenge for rural America. There is a higher
suicide rate among teenagers and adults living in their urban counterparts. Many barriers prevent
rural Americans get the treatment they need (Travers Gustafson, 2009).
On the other hand, the urban areas and the patients are more likely to have vast income
and healthcare facilities. The urban areas can easily access the healthcare facilities compared to
rural areas, so the people need to travel a lot to get to hospital settings and be treated. In some
rural areas, there is simply no mental health service that is a major issue to deal with the mental
health of rural America (Travers Gustafson, 2009).
As far as the types of treatments are concerned, both the rural and urban communities
differ because the urban patients can have easy access and listen to the doctors because of their
high awareness level. Rural patients are less likely to have proper access and believe in-home
treatment. Mental health illness prevails mostly among cities, but rural communities suffer from
the lack of access to be checked and treated. There is a general lack of anonymity in rural areas
