PHI 105 – Week 2
Week 2 - Discussion Question 2
Of the three early metaphysical ideas dualism, materialism, and idealism, I find the most logic in
dualism. Dualism was basically invented by Plato and suggests that everything is either physical or
mental and that many things, such as human beings, have both a physical and mental element (Moore &
Bruder, 2008, p. 105). I find dualism to be the most logical because I have always had a strong feeling
that all living things have both physical and mental (spiritual) attributes. I also believe that these physical
and mental attributes usually work together. For example, I always think about a specific action before I
physically carry it out. The thought may only last for a split second, but it is required to complete the
action.
In our text, dualism was described as "today's common sense" (Moore & Bruder, 2008, p. 106). Rene
Descartes believed that truths could be discovered with skepticism and by doubting everything. His
"doubting methodology" was based upon doubting everything that he possibly could to achieve certainty,
which, in turn, would provide him with a criterion of truth (p. 108). I, too, am the type of thinker that
questions things and concepts that many would not. My friends call me an overthinker. I can honestly
relate to Descartes' dream conjecture. Who hasn't wondered, "For all I know, I might now be dreaming?"
I definitely have!
Ideas such as Descartes' have helped me find the logic in dualism as opposed to trying to wrap my head
around materialism or idealism. I just cannot believe that only the physical or mental exist; that does not
seem possible to me.
