A Literary Critique Using Moralist Approach “The Aged Mother” By Matsuo Basho The Aged Mother is a story of a compassionate, loving, and unselfish mother who had a poor farmer son who lived at the foot of a mountain in Shining many years ago. The province had a despotic leader–– a warrior who had a great and cowardly shrinking from anything suggestive of failing health and strength. This governor decided to order that all the elderly people in the province be put to death. Even though abandoning the elderly was not uncommon at the time, the farmer was different–– he loved his mother dearly. It was no secret that no one has ever thought twice about obeying the governor, but the farmer decided otherwise–– he prepared for what they considered the kindest way to die. He carried his mother on his back and started their journey to the top of the mountain. They lost and went on different turns a few times on their way up. His mother, worried that his son might not make it at the foot of the mountain unscratched, carefully left a pile of twigs on the path that they took. These will serve as his son’s guide home.
