OPERATION GERONIMO 2
Abstract
President Obama had a single-minded goal of dealing with the horrific event of the 9/11
attacks in the most conclusive manner possible. The most important strategy was to hunt the al-
Qaeda leader, Obama bin Laden, irrespective of what it took. With the aim of achieving the goal,
President Obama made a myriad of risky decisions. One of these decisions was Operation
Geronimo, which aimed at raiding Osama bin Laden at his safe house in Abbottābad, Pakistan.
President Obama had the legal authority, as the commander-in-chief, to orchestrate any
initiatives that would help in the capture of Osama and strengthen the fight against terrorism. The
justification of presidential authority in Operation Geronimo was in the overall success of the
raid and the eventual killing of the al-Qaeda leader. This paper will argue that President Obama
had the legal authority to order Operation Geronimo and execute the plan.
