reduce caregiver strain when taking care of an older parent/family member at home.
Family members form an essential part in providing care for older adults. Family
caregivers assume various roles, thus requiring support and training to help obtain favorable
outcomes and expectations of mutual aid (Eliopoulos, 2018). With multiple responsibilities, the
family caregivers strain to balance their responsibilities and caregiving. Various programs and
resources such as respite programs, financial support programs, and support groups help reduce
family caregiver’s strain when caring for older family members at home.
Respite programs occur in various settings, including home and community settings, and
are provided by diverse providers to help family caregivers relieve their responsibilities. Respite
programs include charities and community organizations that volunteer to support the family
caregivers in providing care and relieving their responsibilities for a while. Respite services from
the adult day services offer safe and secure settings for older adults and provide support and
education (Schulz et al., 2016). Support groups are an essential resource for family caregiving
for older people. Online support groups provide access to informal support networks. The
support groups help provide regular contact that aims at certain medical conditions associated
with the older population and offers specialized support (Cuninghame, 2018). The services help
caregivers relieve themselves of the emotional strain from their responsibilities.
Family caregivers face financial strain and find it difficult working away from home and
bear all the costs associated with caregiving. The National Family, Caregiver Support Program,
helps provide financial support for the family caregivers for individuals older than sixty years
(Cuninghame, 2018). Charities and local programs help in providing financial support. Besides,
Medicaid programs help reduce caregiver strain as they offer home and community-based
