1. How do you define management?
200-300 word rule
Due Day 2
Management is a process that utilizes human and financial resources in order to achieve
established goals. Bateman & Snell stated that management is “the process of working with
people and resources to accomplish organizational goals” (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p.19).
Managers are considered the first level of management in a company's organization. Managers
do not do operative work; they often delegate to others in order to achieve their company’s goals.
Management includes organizing, planning, leading, and controlling. Organizing is directed
towards assigning the work among employees and making arrangements to ensure the work will
be completed smoothly (Robbins, 2005). Planning is directed to set up goals and deciding in
advance what actions should be taken in order to achieve those goals. Leading is directed to
support and motivate employees to the point that their performance will be higher. Finally,
controlling is directed to keep track of employees’ performances and to make necessary changes
to improve their performances (Bateman & Snell, 2009).
My job allows me to practice with the management process daily. Indeed, as a regional property
supervisor I set up achievable goals for my work unit on a daily basis. Entering payables daily,
staying within the budget, passing housing authority inspections, increasing cash flow, reducing
expenses, and improving leadership skills are a few examples of short and long-term goals that I
recently set up for my property managers. Setting achievable goals motivates my property
managers to accomplish their goals. Property managers cannot work and will not work towards
unrealistic goals. Indeed, unrealistic goals increase stress and make the work environment
unpleasant; as a result, property managers may decide to resign.
