Homosexuality
In almost all societies, some behaviors do not conform to the accepted social norms. These
forms of behavior are considered deviance. For over four decades, sociological studies have been
centered on the topic of homosexuality. In addition to this statistic, homosexuality is one of the
basic topics covered in deviance course higher learning institutions worldwide. Since the early
1960s, anthologies have emphasized homosexuality whenever giving an illustration of deviant
behavior (Newman, & Wolfgang, 20). Most discussed areas of homosexuality are gay liberation
fronts and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and transsexual cultures (Newman, & Wolfgang,
67). Comparing other deviant behaviors like drug addiction, homosexuality does not affect the
involved individuals negatively. It only becomes problematic since society deems it as so and
because it is intrinsic.
Homosexuality entails engagements of sexual relations by people of the same gender. In

legalizing system and lesbianism threatens the existence of the family, the foundation of our
society. Homosexuality violates human ethics.
Globally, the number of individuals who identify themselves as homosexuals is not known.
However, according to research that was conducted in 1994, it was found that 2.8% of males and
1.4% of females considered themselves homosexuals. This study is most cited by most researchers
when addressing the issues of homosexuality. In the United States, where the issues of
homosexuality have been of concern to many, several studies have been conducted to determine
the number of homosexuals in the country. A study conducted by Smith, and Gates (2001), placed
the gay and lesbian population to be more than 10 million, representing 5% of the total population
of American citizens. Globally homosexual rights have progressed. However, some societies
consider homosexuality to be an illness. In fact, before 1989, the American Psychiatric Association
defined homosexuality as a mental illness. The World Health Organization was not an outlier on
this. Before 1992, WHO classified homosexuality as a disease and health-related health problem
(Halperin, 122).
Homosexuals represent a minority group; this is because they differ from the accepted
sexual orientation practices in most societies. Due to them being a minority group in society, they
become the subject of discrimination. About most religions, homosexuality is regarded as a sinful
act. The view on homosexuality is delicate since different societies have theirs regarding the issue.
Western Europe, Canada, and United States have been at the forefront to advocate for the rights of
gay and lesbians. The larger part of these societies appreciates the diversity of an individual's
sexual orientation practices and has made it possible to integrate homosexuals into society just like
normal people. In the African continent, most countries consider the behavior a barbaric act that
should not be condemned as punishable by law. For these reasons, Africa holds the largest number
