How does strategic planning differ from tactical planning?
Due Day 4
200-300 words
Strategic planning refers to those decisions made by upper management regarding long-term
organizational goals and strategies. Senior executives develop and execute strategic plans,
although they may end up delegating portions of their plans to others. A strategic plan may
include several strategic goals. A strategic goal is a major target or end result “that relate to the
long-term survival, value, and growth of the organization” (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 137). A
few examples of strategic goals are: increasing productivity, growth, improving customer
services, increasing market share, and so forth (Bateman & Snell, 2009).
Tactical planning turns general strategic plans and goals into specific ones that will be
accomplished by specific departments of the company such as accounting or human resources.
For instance, if the strategic plan is directed towards the lunch of a new product line, the tactical
plan for the manufacturing unit may “involve the design, testing, and installation of the
equipment needed to produce the line” (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 138).
In conclusion, three major differences between strategic and tactical planning can be identified as
analyzing the managerial level, level of detail, and time horizon. More specifically, strategic
planning is developed by top management and it has a low level of detail. Further, the time
horizon is long (3 to 7 years). Conversely, tactical planning is developed by middle management
level and it has medium level of detail. Finally, the time horizon for tactical planning is medium;
usually, 1 to 2 years (Bateman & Snell, 2009).
