While mathematics and statistics seem to be different in various ways, it is possible to
create a meaningful interconnection. Mathematics involves the study of abstract structures, while
statistics consists of the study of data collection with the intent of making decision s concerning a
larger population (Gattuso, 2006). However, it is worth noting that statistics is a discipline on its
own, and it is not a branch of mathematics, just like Physics is not. Mathematics is essential in
data science through its concepts that aid in identifying patterns. Mathematics enhances the
understanding of data science through the creation of statistical algorithms and probability
theory. Mathematics also helps in data science through the creation of patterns.
The primary role of mathematics is to face everyday problems. Numbers are present in
almost every activity of human life, including comparisons, tables, prices, estimates, and other
numerical messages (Gattuso, 2006). Mathematicians try to solve problems as they try to find
standard features in distinct issues through patterns and therefore classify the behavior that
results from specific systems. For instance, mathematicians can develop differential equations to
show the relationship between systems. Mathematical theory and computational techniques and
algorithms can help solve economic, scientific, business, and engineering problems by creating
mathematical models.
The statistics that try to describe the world around us also contain much of this
mathematics. This connection between mathematics and statistics can further be determined by
analyzing the textbooks used in the school curriculum and a description of experiments.
Statisticians also seek to solve problems through the development of techniques in data
collection and analysis (Shen, Shen, Zhu & Marron, 2016). For instance, statisticians design
experiments that enable them to make valid conclusions regarding certain phenomena (Ben-Zvi,
