HLT 312V Topic 4 DQ 2
In your professional career one should prefer to act ethically. Explain types of reflective practices and
methods for integrating them into your work life, so as to ensure that you think critically about both the
art and the science of your patient care delivery. Provide examples.
Reflection-in-action (Thinking on feet) (Schon, 1987).
This type of reflection is used while an individual is mixed up with a certain situation, mostly a
patient's interaction. This reflection requires you to use observation analysis, feeling, touching or
listening for you to solve a problem. In turn, the health specialist changes their view on beliefs,
values and themselves that are resulted by problem-solving. It might take quite some time to
establish reflection-in-action since it is very intuitive. In this case, you have to think fast since
everything is being done simultaneously, thus you must be an experienced practitioner.
Reflection-on-action (After the event thinking)
This type of reflection entails withdrawing from a situation, which means that it occurs after the
situation has already taken place. It requires some time which turns out to be a challenge to some
extent. In this type of action, you have to look back on a situation, uncover knowledge, interpret
and analyze. This helps you increase your knowledge and at the same time challenges you
through your concepts and theories. For instance, you can have an argument where both you and
the patient think you are right, but then, after that it you that if you look at things from their
perspective, there can be some validation.
