Effective communication is instrumental in our interpersonal relationships. According to
the scriptures, the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossians admonishes that we should “Let our
speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that we may know how you ought to answer
each person” (Colossians 4:6 ESV). The scriptures call us to be able to know how to answer in
each situation. However, when dealing with difficult conversations, we are not always able to do
this. Personally, when am handling difficult conversations, I use different methods of
communication such as listening, verbal communication, non-verbal communication as well as
written communication.
In these situations, I find that it is easier for me to sit quietly and listen to the other party
as they express their views on the difficult position. I have a preference for wanting to see the
other person’s point of view and the things that inform their conviction. It is also easy for me to
express and explain my perspective. However, I find it challenging to deal with my non-verbal
communication. I do not have what some would consider a poker face and as such my perception
of what the other person is saying is often reflected in my non-verbal expressions even when I
would like to conceal it.
When seeking to communicate with people from different gender, I believe that it is
imperative that communication changes and bridges the gap to avoid any misconceptions. For
example, as a man communicates with a woman, there is a need to adhere to certain social norms
such as appropriate gesturing, touching, and even social distancing. One of the biggest hurdles I
perceive from relating with the opposite sex is maintaining appropriate interpersonal boundaries
and communicating without going beyond what is appropriate.
