Effect of Age on Parasympathetic Nervous System
Purpose Statement
This study examines the influence and effect of age on the function of the
parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system controls diverse nervous
responses to external stimuli, including unconscious actions (Chang et al., 2019). This part of the
brain is essential for reflex activities among individuals. Any external stimuli causing harm or
pain on the receptors cause the system to trigger faster and immediate feedback from the
effectors. The process results in removing body parts in contact with the stimuli for pain (Rudd
et al., 2017). This also regulates and controls the unconscious body's behaviors and actions.
However, some studies suggest that age affects parasympathetic nervous system operations. Age
reduces some essential functioning and operation of this part of the brain, hindering respiratory,
cardiovascular, and papillary metabolic functions.
Introduction
The parasympathetic nervous system is part of the brain that controls and regulates
unconscious actions among individuals. This part is essential for human reflex and unconscious
behaviors among individuals (Kasahara et al., 2021). It is also crucial to point out that the
parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for normal bodily functions. It counters the
sympathetic nervous system, which is a critical component of the autonomous system
responsible for involuntary action in stressful or dangerous situations. Therefore while the
parasympathetic nervous system is active when the body is resting, the sympathetic nervous
system is vital when the body is active. With age comes the slowing down of bodily functions
and especially those related exercises. This study examines the effect of age on the efficiency of
the parasympathetic nervous system collecting data and information from scholarly articles.
