The North Saskatchewan and South Saskatchewan can be divided into : • Canadian Shield in the North, and • Younger sedimentary rocks of the Phanerozoic Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in the south. The Northern Saskatchewan is a part of Canadian shield which is basically an area of exposed Precambrian crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks which are 3300 to 1100 million years old. This Canadian shield covers around two fifth of the total area of Saskatchewan. Overlying these Canadian shield, a large sedimentary basin exists which is around 1700 to 1500 million years old. This sedimentary basin lying over the Precambrian Canadian shield is known as Athabasca Basin which is rich in rare economic minerals like Uranium, Gold and base metals like Copper and Zinc. The faults associated wit this Athabasca basin produces uranium found in Northern Saskatchewan. The Athabasca Basin, which formed between 1.75 and 1.5 billion years ago is the oldest sedimentary bsin in Saskatchewan. It covers around 82,250 Km2 in Northern Saskatchewan and northeastern Alberta.
