Module 8 retail fragmentation
What explains the fragmented nature of India’s retail sector? What are the benefits of this
system? What are the costs?
Fragmentation is one of the notable features in the Indian retail market. The retail sector
is fragmented since the industry is dominated by small retail outlets (Srinivasan, 2021). The
Kirana stores and the small retail outlets are responsible for the high dominance level in the retail
sector, promoting market fragmentation. Most of the retail outlets are operated to encourage
customers to change their perception towards the retail sector and its effectiveness (Mishra,
2020). The fragmentation nature noted in the retail sector in India is mainly due to the minimal
efforts taken in developing the supply chains. With high population growth in the nation and the
high number of outlets that focuses on serving this population, the nation has recorded this
unmanageable fragmentation. One of the benefits of this is that small business owners can gain
financial advantages (Barbosa, Castañeda-Ayarza & Ferreira, 2020).
On the other hand, there are some costs that the community will experience due to this
system. As the article mentions, some food from the farm to the table is likely to get rotten since
there is a notable transportation lag in this system. The cost of the system is that the customers
don't always get the products they require on time due to this delay.
Given the political and economic realities in India, what is the best entry strategy for a
foreign retailer?
Based on the current initiatives in the new system, foreign retailers don’t have to
experience a lengthy process of obtaining the permit of operating in the nation (Oktarina et al.,
2020). this improvement has made it possible for foreign investors to notice many opportunities
