One famous person in the history of Public Health is John Snow. John Snow remains a
legendary figure in public health as the father of modern epidemiology. The English
anesthesiologist conducted pioneering investigations on cholera epidemics demonstrating that
contaminated water is the primary cause of cholera. John Snow implemented upstream thinking
to help solve the cholera epidemic of the 19
th
century and other key areas of public health.
According to Butterfield (2017), upstream thinking “considers the social, economic, and
environmental origins of health problems that manifest at the population level.” Upstream
thinking involves addressing the root causes of public health problems. The Legendary John
Snow applied upstream thinking in his investigations on cholera. He found that cholera is caused
by contaminated water. Therefore to eliminate the cholera epidemic, John Snow concluded that
there is a need to uplift the economic, social, political, and environmental status of our societies.
Instead of thinking just about the contaminated water, John Snow thought of the root cause of
having to drink or use contaminated water. He adopted upstream thinking to link cholera to poor
economic, social, political, and environmental conditions in our societies. John Snow’s upstream
thinking helped to eliminate the cholera epidemic in the 19
th
century. Its thinking is still used
today to fight cholera and other diseases in the public health domain.
