responsibilities of that role and the educational preparation required. Explain what leadership
traits, styles, or qualities are required to be successful in this role and why.
Corporate chief nursing officers main role is the standardize, develop, and ensure the
appropriate implementation of evidence based practice into practice throughout the hospital.
According to Hader, there are virtually no studies or published literature on the scope and
standards for this position because the role is relatively new.
The CCNO should have extensive experience as a chief nurse executive in a hospitalized
setting. Some minimal qualifications include having a minimum of a masters degree in nursing,
nationally certified as a nurse executive, and have a proven track record for achieving goals.
They should be leaders who possess skills to clearly articulate a vision, be innovative, inspire
others and set High expectations for achieving goals.
The CCNO represents the entire nursing department at meetings of governing bodies and keep
board members up to date with work that is being accomplished throughout the health system.
They provide vision and direction for nursing though out the healthcare system that they
represent.
As a chief nurse, it is mandated that they maintain clinical and patient care standards. This
includes ensuring that patients are safe in the hospital and have access to the right medical
care. In order to do this, they must work close with hospital management and stakeholders to
acquire and gain access to appropriate resources. The chief nursing officer is also responsible
for formulating and implementing new nursing strategies. This requires extensive knowledge of
the nursing procedures, rules and policies. They oversee the hospital and ensure it is running
appropriately. This includes organizing, directing, and coordinating medical and health services
in compliance with government regulations and policies from boards. The CNO leadership
duties go beyond the scope of nursing to serve as a spokesperson or representative. The CNO
also works to maintain positive relationships between nurses and physicians.
